Weekend Road Trip to Dorset

Weekend Road Trip to Dorset

Over the past weekend I took a road trip with a few friends of mine to the beautiful county of Dorset in South West England. Dorset is renowned for its broad elevated chalk downs, steep limestone ridges, low-lying clay valleys. Three quarters of coast line that stretches the width of the Dorset County is part of the Jurassic Coast, which is a World Natural Heritage Site. The most famous location in Dorset County is of course Durdle Door.

With a few Minor Figures Cold Brew Coffee's in hand, Google Maps set for Kimmeridge Bay and Bonobo playing in the background, we set off from London bright and early at 6am on Saturday morning. After 90mins into the journey we made a detour into New Forest National Park to do a bit of exploring and a portrait session.

After a couple of shots were in the bag we set of for Kimmeridge Bay. On the journey down the tiny roads to the beachside carpark we were treated with an incredible vast view of the surrounding valley. Once at Kimmeridge Bay we ventured up to the top of the cliffs to take in the views. Next stop Lulworth Cove.

Lulworth Cove is definitely a site to see. On one side you have a beautiful bay thin shoreline wrapping the interior and on the other side you have a very small cove with some stunning, but also deteriorating, cliff faces. With my trusty Canon 16-35mm f4 lens i managed to snag a few really nice wide shots. Having a few people in frame really helped to show off the size and scale of these cliffs. Although Durdle Door is stones throw away, we decided to drive and lets just say it was a worth while choice.

Finally we finished up at Durdle Door. Lets just say the photos you see on the internet just don't do it justice. Its truly a stunning part of the UK. Although the land is privately owned, its completely open to the public and thankfully it is. The classic Durdle Door natural arch, shaped by the 1000's of years of waves crashing against it, is a sight to see. If you perch yourself ~10m to the right of the steps down the beach, you will have that classic Durdle Door view. That beautifully arched rock face to your left, the English Channel in the middle and some very tall and overbearing chalk rock faces to your right. After dipping my feet in the ocean, a few more shots and time lapses we made our way back to London.

If you live in the UK or are planning to visit, a trip to Dorset is an absolute must.
